residential client frequently asked questions

Is my residential project a good fit for Shelterbelt Architecture?

If you are seeking a modernist design then yes. Our studio is committed to creating modern residences that are embedded in the Edmonton context. Our designs are appropriately detailed for a winter climate and our aesthetic is informed by regional ideas. Every project is unique and our architecture is developed to reflect the inhabitants (you), the site and our evolving ideas/art. If you would prefer a more traditional form (craftsman, tudor, victorian, transitional) we are not the firm for you.

How long will it take to design and build my house?

Design typically takes from 6 months up to a year to complete depending on the size and complexity. Getting a building permit can take up to 4 months. You should allow about a year for the construction period.

Do I need to hire an architect for my house?

No. Houses fall under Part 9 of the Alberta Building Code and do not require an architect.
